Surgical Site Infection: Where Are We Today?

Objectives:

Infection has been a prominent issue throughout human existence and surgical site infection (SSI) has been, and continues to be, a significant health problem throughout the world. The incidence of SSI remains approximately 2% for clean, 3% for clean-contaminated, 6% for contaminated, and greater than 7% for dirty/infected operations. SSIs are divided into superficial, deep, and organ space infections.

The objective of this session was to describe the present status of the prevalence, prophylaxis, and treatment of SSI and discuss steps that can be taken to decrease future incidence rates.

Speakers:

The session took place on Friday 16 May from 13.30-15.00 in room N103.
